Serene Buddha

Carved into every Buddha image is a single raised bump at the crown — a mark, the tradition says, of wisdom itself.

That raised crown is the ushnisha, one of the small set of physical marks — alongside the whorl between the brows and the stretched earlobes of a prince who gave up his jewellery — that sculptors across Asia have carried into stone and bronze for two thousand years, each one shorthand for a mind gone past the need for the world's attention.

Here the whole face turns three-quarters away, eyes cast down in the same half-closed gaze every Buddha image wears — not asleep, not watching you, somewhere between. Behind the head, a red disc sits off to one side like a sun caught low, with soft wave-like cloud bands and a sharp pink-black wedge of architecture holding the ground beneath it.

Where it lives: a meditation corner, a reading chair, any room that could use one object that doesn't ask anything of you.
