Framed Giant Green Apple Surreal Wall Art Print

In 1952 Magritte filled a bedroom with a comb and a shaving brush the size of furniture.

Personal Values, now at SFMOMA, scales up a comb, a bar of soap, a wine glass and a shaving brush until they stop being useful and start being monuments. Magritte's own explanation: blown up like that, an object "has specifically lost its social character, it has become an object of useless luxury." Unlike the Surrealists he's usually grouped with, his disorientation comes from calm, matter-of-fact scale rather than dream logic.

This print takes the same idea and gives it one object instead of four — a single green apple, rim-lit in red, filling nearly the full height of the room, with a small dark chair at its base as the only scale reference. Nothing else in the space is doing anything strange. The apple is the whole event.

Where it lives: an office, a reading room, anywhere that wants one good, quiet joke on the wall.
