Van Gogh gave his last Provence canvas to a road bending past one huge, gloomy cypress. This road answers with a whole hill on fire instead.
The road toward a hilltop town was a working subject long before it was a cliché — Van Gogh built his last painting in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Road with Cypress and Star, around exactly this kind of bend, the cypress he called 'beautiful of line' splitting the composition in half. A generation earlier, Pissarro had already spent years outside Paris painting the same kind of road near Pontoise and Louveciennes, working alongside Monet, Renoir and Sisley to catch how differently the same route reads depending on the hour.
Hilltop Village Trail takes the drama furthest of the five — a storm-dark sky, a tower silhouetted hard against a cloud so large it seems to be answering the hill back, fields striped in alternating coral and blue-grey like the light itself is moving across them.
Where it lives: a dining room wall that wants real weight, or a stairway landing that could use one dramatic turn.
